A Young Eagle Takes His First Flight at the Age of 16 in an L-39 Albatros

On Saturday, November 26th, the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 40 based at Whiteman Airport (KWHP) in southern California reached a significant milestone: the volunteer pilots flew their 10,000th Young Eagle. For thirty years, the chapter has provided Young Eagle flights.

Young Eagles is a national program that provides free flight experiences to children ages 8 to 17. Pilots volunteer for these events, which take place across the country, often spending the entire day at the airport providing participants with twenty-minute flights.

On November 26, 140 children were signed upwards to wing. According to an argument from EAA Chapter forty, pilots came from as far away as Santa Barbara to help, ensuring that every child acquainted received a ride. A Van'second RV-7, a Grumman American Tiger, a Cessna 182, a Navion, and a Rutan Varieze were among the planes that took part.

Young Eagle winner number 10,000 was a young lady named Elicia Koehnlein, who is 16 years old and a member of the local Aviation Explorers post. While wearing a flight suit and helmet that were not his own, Koehnlein was given the opportunity to ride in an L-39 Albatros that was owned and flown by Denis Oliver, who was also a member of EAA Chapter 40. Oliver was the founder of Jet 1, which is a civilian fighter jet world championship in which pilots fly real fighter-jets in a laser tag battle against gamers.The Czech Republic designed and manufactured the Aero L-39 Albatros, a high-performance jet trainer.
